Chapter Five

Throughout chapter five, Morning Girl seems to be on a quest to learn more about herself.  She asked her mother, father, and even Star Boy about what her face looks like.  Her mother even tried to get Morning Girl to understand by closing her eyes and tracking features along each of their faces.  Read the quotes below and think about how the author uses figurative language to communicate exactly what Morning Girl finds in the process.

“Are my teeth crooked as the trunk of palm trees?”

“I know the color of my arms – tan as the inside of a yam after the air has dried it.”

“…my cheeks were hills on either side.”

“Finally I moved to my ears…they were as delicate and complicated as the inside of a spiral shell, but soft.”

“She has a chin like a starfish and brows like white clouds on the horizon…her cheeks swell like mountains when she smiles.”
