Chapter Three

Authors often use figurative language to help paint a picture in the reader’s mind.  They do this by comparing something from the story to an object or experience that most people can relate to (common background knowledge).

During chapter 3, Morning girl describes her family in the following way:

…the world fits together so tightly, the pieces like pebbles and shells sunk into the sand after the tide has gone out, before anyone has walked on the beach and left footprints.  In our house, though, my brother was the footprints.
