Chapter Two

Authors often use figurative language to help paint a picture in the reader’s mind.  They do this by comparing something from the story to an object or experience that most people can relate to (common background knowledge).

Below are a couple of examples of figurative language from Morning Girl.

“I thought of bats and how they race through the dark sky as fast as late summer rain.”

“…white sand scattered on the sky’s black beach.”

o       Choose one of the examples of figurative language above, identify if it’s a simile or a metaphor, and explain how it helps you visualize what the author is describing in the story.






o       On page 8, Star Boy states “I don’t like…nothing.  You know: nothing.”  What does Star Boy mean by this?






For group, think about how this might relate to what Star Boy says on page 12 about “…because there are special things if you watch closely.”
